Description: This piece is a classic Hashira-e (Pillar Print), a rare and narrow format of Japanese woodblock prints (ukiyo-e) originally designed to be pasted onto the wooden interior pillars of Japanese homes.


The subject features a woman in a bold Benkei-koshi (checkered) pattern kimono, a design popularized in the Edo period.

 

Good Vintage Condition. Displays characteristic verticality with some age-related toning (foxing) and slight fading consistent with 19th-century prints. Framed under glass in a modern black gallery frame with silk-texture matting.
