Description: An authentic Japanese Tansu (clothing chest) dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. Constructed from paulownia wood (kiri), known for its lightweight and moisture-resistant properties, this chest features a multi-drawer configuration designed for versatile storage.
The piece is heavily accented with hand-forged iron hardware, including a decorative "gunbai" style lock plate on the upper drawer, corner bracing, and traditional "kakute" (square) handles. The lower section includes a secure hinged door (kannon-biraki) revealing small interior "safe" drawers, typically used for storing valuables or tea ceremony implements. The chest is presented on a modern black minimalist riser, elevating it to a functional height for a contemporary home or office.
