Large Vintage African Marka Style "W" Plank Mask with Feathers

$650.00Price
Quantity

Description: An impressive, large-scale West African carved wooden mask, likely in the style of the Marka or Ligbi peoples (Mali/Ivory Coast). The mask features a distinct "W" or trident-shaped superstructure with three large wooden planks extending from a central face. The face is elongated with a prominent, thin nose ridge and small mouth, typical of Sahelian styles. The edges of the wooden planks are adorned with dark feathers (likely chicken or guinea fowl), adding significant texture and silhouette.

The wood exhibits a dark, encrusted patina, suggesting age or application of ritual libations. This is a substantial statement piece ideal for gallery walls or collectors of ethnographic art.

Condition: Vintage / Good. The item shows signs of age consistent with a vintage piece.

  • Wood: Structurally sound but features visible desiccation cracks, most notably a vertical crack running down the bridge of the nose. This is common in aged wood and does not threaten the integrity of the piece.

  • Surface: Dark, crusty patina with expected wear and abrasion.

  • Feathers: Feathers are present but show signs of shedding, thinning, and ruffling due to age.
