This is an exclusive presale item available for purchase prior to our estate sale, taking place Saturday, January 24th, and Sunday, January 25th. Presale purchase only before doors open this weekend.
Large-scale hand-painted devotional cloth depicting Saint George and the Dragon, executed in the traditional Ethiopian Christian (Ethiopian Orthodox) style. The composition features Saint George on horseback slaying the dragon, rendered with bold line work, vibrant color, and Ge’ez script inscriptions typical of Ethiopian ecclesiastical painting.
This work was exhibited in 2006 as part of Gods as We Shape Them, an exhibition of works associated with May Weber. While undated, the piece is believed to be 20th century and is painted on cloth rather than printed or woven.
